Waves, all that Glows Sees

by Véronique Côté

For the very young

From 18 months to 4 years old

Wow! We had no idea what an extraordinary experience we were going to have. The show was simply magical. Every one of us was mesmerized and uplifted, teachers and children included… It was a joy to see theatre that spoke to children’s capacity to enjoy quiet, magical and fanciful experiences.

Sara Edlin, Teacher, New York City, March 2018

Two Québec productions stand out as absolutely exceptional. The first…Flots, is a creation by Véronique Côté and the Théâtre des Confettis…. It’s a charmingly simple show that kept the little ones in the audience utterly spellbound with its poetry, freshness and inventiveness.

Michel Bélair, Le Devoir, April 2012

Flots seamlessly mingles object theatre and puppetry with shadow play and musical theatre… shaping images and sounds into a little poem that sounds like a gentle lullaby.

Daphné Bathalon, Revue JEU, No. 144

It’s so beautiful, so tender. There are also silences, and the serenity brought by silence, … A real bubble of contemplation and joy is built around the youngsters. It was wonderful to see the children.

Anne-Josée Cameron, Retour sur le monde, Première chaîne de Radio-Canada, May 2012

Marked by contemplation and wonder, beautiful ideas take us up into the sky, to the moon, and down into the ocean, to its farthest depths. We believe and smile, because of the ideas and the presence of visual poetry.

Jasmin Hains, Retour sur le monde, Première chaîne de Radio-Canada, May 2012

With minimal means, true magic is created, punctuated with humour and suspense. Enthralled, a child in the first row says, “I never saw a show before. It’s too beautiful, too beautiful.” And a young friend adds, “This show is good.” Everyone is on tiptoe, with their eyes full of dreams.

Dominique Berthéas, L’Union, Champagne Ardenne Picardie, L’Ardennais, March 2012

A simple, gentle and poetic voyage introducing children to the world of theatre.…they are fascinated, calm and attentive as this surprising universe opens up before their eyes.… Children and adults leave the place filled with tranquillity, a pebble held in the palm of their hands and serenity in the depths of their hearts.

Magali Paquin, MonThéâtre.qc.ca, May 2012

I don’t really know how to do theatre for babies. And that’s what thrills me – knowing so little about it. That’s what draws me to test these waters – my own lack of knowledge…  and my desire. Doing theatre for babies is to explore the unknown. It goes against common sense. It’s political. It’s also necessary, I believe, because babies have a right to beauty and they’re not always exposed to it.  Theatre for babies implies commitment, but a commitment that draws us in. It’s the opposite of cynicism. It’s hope in its purest form. It’s an attempt to talk with the beginning of the world.

Waves, all that Glows Sees

French, English, Spanish, Portuguese and bilingual English-Mandarin

Show created at Méli’Môme Festival in Reims (France), March 2012.

To begin with, you follow a little pathway of shells and stones that goes around a big tent made of sheets. You can hear someone playing a harmonica. It seems that people may be already inside the tent. They want you to come and see, so you go in. You walk through the opening. When you’re inside the tent it’s very pleasant. It’s warm, but there’s a tiny breeze. A little melody makes your heart beat more calmly. The light is gentle, like that of the setting sun.

Inside, a tall man is dreaming of the sea. He makes sand appear, then turtles, seagulls and fish, and then dune grass, the sky, boats and time that passes.

The man doesn’t know how to wait, so he plays at hiding in the depth of the water. He becomes a treasure that waits. And waits. And waits for you.

Beside him, another tall man makes music and lets his voice float out over the ocean. To wait is to hope, and this happens often. It happens all the time. To little kids and to grown-ups too.
